More importantly, we've had a chance to review the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus. We feel this a little bit smaller S20 model is doubtless the better choice for most people.

If even the S20 Plus is too large, the S20 is accessible and we've reviewed it here.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the realm "ultra" as: "beyond what's commonplace, proper, or slight; excessive; extreme. " Similar to "mega" and "uber," ultra is a word we use to overemphasize anything: ultra-fast, ultra-powerful, ultra-big.It's an apt name for a tool inclusive of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G, a phone that tries most likely too hard to win at everything.Read: Samsung Galaxy S20 Buyers Guide – Everything You Need to Know

Samsung's mega flagship takes every spec to the Nth degree, with the biggest this and the quickest that. It packs every possible function into a chassis so large it well-nigh qualifies as its own zip code. Cramming the better of the best into one monster kit does not necessarily have the result you'd expect. Find out what we mean in our uber-specified Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra review.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra review notes: I used the S20 Ultra over a period of five days. The phone was working Android 10 with Samsung's One UI 2. 1 and the March 2020 security patch. The phone didn't acquire any updates in the course of the review period.

Setting the scene

Samsung Galaxy S series is the Korean company's bread-and-butter product line. These phones, which now are available in three sizes, compete immediately with the Apple iPhone, Google Pixel, and LG's G/V series. Competition during this space is fierce. Every few months we get new models that appear to outgun the others with some new whizbang characteristic. This time around, Samsung targeting the camera. The agency says it totally rebuilt the Galaxy S line around new imaging expertise. Samsung did this to be able to convince consumers it's time to improve. The average time between phone purchases has stretched to a record 26. 2 months, meaning people hold onto their phones for more than two years before buying a new one. Samsung wants S8 and S9 owners to pony up and adopt the S20, so it gave them a reason to: ultra-levels of camera zoom.Beyond zoom, the S20 adds variety of appealing camera points, consisting of the capacity to take hyperlapse videos at night.Combined with the quickest processor available, huge quantities of memory and garage, a stunning reveal, and bountiful battery life, the S20 Ultra doubtless has it all. But does it really?

The Samsung Galaxy S20 series is eventually professional after months of leaks, and we've three contraptions to choose between this year.Either way, you're getting the same core event, that includes flagship power, 5G connectivity, …

Design: Less soul

Galaxy S6 and 2018's Galaxy S9 the agency's design chops grew in leaps and boundaries. By the time the Galaxy S10 arrived in 2019, the agency was delivering one of the crucial best-looking, most finely-crafted handsets available in the market. This year, Samsung appears to have scaled back some and the S20 is quite the lesser for it.

Judging a book by its cover

Maybe it is the color decision, maybe it is the utilitarian (and, let's accept it, ugly) camera module on the rear, I dunno. I simply find the design to be ultra understated. The all-screen slab leaves almost no room for individuality. Looking at its face, the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G could be every other phone on the market. Nothing concerning the shape, other than most likely its sheer size, helps it stand out.For a price that starts at $1,399, I expect some personality.arcanetechs.com/i/blog/1600665187/aHR0cHM6Ly9jZG41Ny5hbmRyb2lkYXV0aG9yaXR5Lm5ldC93cC1jb250ZW50L3VwbG9hZHMvMjAyMC8wMi9TYW1zdW5nLUdhbGF4eS1TMjAtVWx0cmEtZmFjZS1wcm9maWxlLXRpbWVzLXNxdWFyZS0xMjAweDY3NS5qcGc%3D">

The color selection is especially disappointing. I loved the palate of last year's Galaxy S10. The Ultra is available only in Cosmic Black and Cosmic Gray. The word "cosmic" implies "out of this world. " There's not anything cosmic about these shades. They're probably the most conservative and boring, earthly alternatives available.Samsung didn't sell me on the S20 Ultra 5G's looks, but it nailed the execution. Like its predecessors, the S20 Ultra 5G is a fine piece of hardware that exudes high quality and craftsmanship. The front glass is just a little (and I mean a little bit) less curved along the side edges than last year's S10, however the rear glass has a steeper curve to it.The Gorilla Glass 6 panels are separated by a metal frame that's thick on the underside and top, and skinny down the edges. These pieces are assembled tightly. The phone is sealed up and contains an IP68 rating, so that you can unintentionally dunk it in some water and it will live to tell the tale the experience. I let it sit in a bowl of water for a couple of minutes and it emerged none the more severe for wear.gallery-caption margin-left: 0; /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-comprises/media. php */

Controls, ports, and buttons on the S20 Ultra are what you'd expect to see from Samsung's flagship. The screen lock/power button and volume toggle are on the correct fringe of the phone. The buttons have tight, but satisfying, travel and feedback. There is no dedicated Bixby button this year, thank goodness. The combined SIM/microSD card tray is found on top, while the USB-C port and downward-firing speaker are on the bottom. There is no headphone jack. Samsung eliminated the headphone jack on the Note 10 series last year, and that absence is carried over here. A pair of USB-C headphones is protected in the box, but you will likely be better off with Samsung's new Galaxy Buds Plus true instant headphones.

The camera module is hideous. I know as a result of my 13-year-old daughter is repulsed by it.The camera module bugs me. Not just because it's huge, but as the framing for it is made from plastic. If you touch it with your fingers you'll notice it has an affordable, hollow feel to it.Ick, Samsung. To be fair to Samsung, nevertheless it, the camera modules of the Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max and Google Pixel 4 XL are just as hideous. I know this as a result of my 13-year-old daughter is repulsed by all three.Galaxy Note 10 Plus, which means it's giant and calls for two hands most of the time. The S20 Ultra 5G doesn't fit well in wallet, despite its slippery surfaces, and more or less requires a case for protection, that can only make it bigger.60Hz, which is what most monitors use, or 120Hz, which is best for gaming and such.Lemme inform you, the 120Hz environment gives the screen a luscious smoothness that has to be seen to be believed. Even without the capability to mix the high pixel count and high refresh rate at an identical time, you have got a screen that simply dominates every other panel on the market.will impact battery life, but which you could tweak brightness, the blue light filter, color profile, and all of the other usual settings.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G has an ultra-attractive screen.Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor on board. It comes with 12GB of RAM, but you could opt for 16GB when you have $1,599 to spare. Our review unit had the stock 12GB. Running 3DMark, AnTuTu, and GeekBench, the 865 completely destroyed every other phone presently in these tests' respective databases. The S20 Ultra bested 99% of all other instruments tested, and introduced especially lovely consequences when in comparison to last-generation Snapdragon 855 hardware. Wow.

More importantly, the telephone felt fast all of the time. No matter what content material or app you throw at the S20 Ultra 5G, it devours the calculations and offers buttery smooth performance. I noticed a slight, slight slowdown when I bumped the S20 Ultra 5G to the whole determination or faster refresh rate. That's a lot of information for the processor to crunch, but it, and the telephone does an admirable job.As always, Samsung means that you can empty out the memory and clean things up to give the phone a functionality jolt. Then there's the 5,000mAh battery. The S20 and S20 Plus have 4,000 and 4,500mAh batteries, respectively. The largest phone gets the largest battery and Samsung claims it's going to deliver two days of battery life.Again, this relies upon.On a day when I set the phone to the speedier 120Hz refresh rate at Full HD+ choice, with the screen brightness and battery to adaptive mode, the 5,000mAh pushed from morning to night with no challenge. There was a small reserve left in the tank, absolutely not enough to get it via even half an alternate day. I had to charge it that night. I got the same consequences when I set the phone to the whole Quad HD+ resolution at 60Hz.It's clear to me that if Samsung allowed owners of the S20 Ultra 5G to use both the total decision and the quicker refresh rate at the same time that the battery would die a much quicker death.

If you go together with the conservative Full HD+ decision and 60Hz refresh rate, the battery definitely shows more sturdiness.Things are various if you go along with the Full HD+ resolution option and 60Hz. At this conservative setting, the battery definitely shows more sturdiness. I coaxed it through a full day and most of a second before it gave out absolutely. This is probably going the setting that most folk should use many of the time. (Stinks that the screen won't dynamically shift from 60Hz to 120Hz when you start gambling games.)

Last, charging the phone. The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra supports 45W wired charging and 25W wireless charging. Unfortunately, only a 25W charging brick is available in the box. You have to pay extra for the quicker charger. The phone ingested current like a champ. I found it boosted the battery by 50% after just 27 minutes plugged in, and after just 35 minutes on a charging pad.A full charge took about an hour. Considering the size of the battery, that's specialized. In fact, the phones assist Wireless Powershare just like the S10 series, which permits the phones themselves to serve as instant …

Camera: Space Zoooooooom

8K video capture. The main sensor is a beast. Few phones have shipped with such a high megapixel count (see the Xiaomi Mi Note 10), but that you would be able to make sure more are on the manner. The idea behind such a sensor is two-fold: First, to allow more light and, second, to provide remarkable detail. This sensor is what powers the S20 Ultra's good low-light performance. While the bottom setting is to take 12MP shots, that you would be able to opt to shoot the total 108MP at any time. The full determination shots are indeed amazing of their detail and the noise isn't as bad as I anticipated it to be.

Single Take is the better of the bunch. When you press the shutter button and record three to 10 seconds of video, it slices and dices the outcomes and offers you up to nine different photo types, adding video, AI best shot, boomerang, and such. It takes apply, and is not always ideal, but it opens up a new realm of probability once you're searching to snag more than a single still photo at the click of a button.gallery-item float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; #gallery-15 img border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; #gallery-15 . gallery-caption margin-left: 0; /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media. php */

Let's talk zoom. Samsung says the phone is able of offering 100x zoom. That's technically true, but it is not the promoting point you believe it is. Using a mix of the lenses, optical zoom, and digital cropping, Samsung is able to create various zoom options. You can capture shots at 0. 5x, 1x, 2x, 4x, 5x, 10x, 30x, and 100x using simple on-screen buttons. Alternately, which you could drag the slider up and all the way down to find the correct amount of zoom for the shot. You can see the progression in the samples below.gallery-item float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; #gallery-16 img border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; #gallery-16 . gallery-caption margin-left: 0; /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-comprises/media. php */ 0. 5x 1x 2x
4x 10x 30x

Clearly some of these are more usable than the others. The 30x, for instance, borders on nugatory, and the 100x (below) is in actual fact no use.No matter what I was shooting, there was never a state of affairs where the 100x shot turned out well. Don't get me wrong, though. If you look at the 0. 5x shot and the 100x shot and discover they came from a similar phone, you need to agree it's amazing to a point.com/i/blog/1600665187/aHR0cHM6Ly9jZG41Ny5hbmRyb2lkYXV0aG9yaXR5Lm5ldC93cC1jb250ZW50L3VwbG9hZHMvMjAyMC8wMi9TYW1zdW5nLUdhbGF4eS1TMjAtVWx0cmEtNUctcGhvdG8tc2FtcGxlLTEwMHgtem9vbS05MDB4Njc1LmpwZw%3D%3D">

At the end of the day, what I can tell you is that the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G has one of the crucial flexible cameras available on any cellphone today.Update: February 27 – Samsung issued an announcement concerning camera functionality on early review units and said, "The Galaxy S20 features a groundbreaking, sophisticated camera system. We are continually working to optimize performance to deliver the good experience for consumers. As a part of this ongoing effort, we are engaged on a future update to enhance the camera experience. " We will proceed to evaluate the camera over the years to see if it improves.

Odds and ends

Similar to Apple's AirPlay, a new function called Quick Share makes it easy to pass files from side to side. You turn this tool on via the fast settings menu. The application prefers Samsung users, but this allows you to curate a list of people who can blindly send you stuff. The other option is "every person" that's not an option so far as I am involved. I checked it out with an alternate Samsung device hand and it worked flawlessly for sending photos and videos backward and forward.arcanetechs.com/i/blog/1600665187/aHR0cHM6Ly9jZG41Ny5hbmRyb2lkYXV0aG9yaXR5Lm5ldC93cC1jb250ZW50L3VwbG9hZHMvMjAyMC8wMi9TYW1zdW5nLUdhbGF4eS1TMjAtVWx0cmEtUXVpY2stU2hhcmUtMi01NDB4MTIwMC5qcGc%3D">

The phone supports 5G from AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon Wireless, but we were unable to test this function. None of the providers supplied a 5G-able SIM card.We did use the telephone in areas that offer T-Mobile and Verizon 5G coverage, but did not have any luck catching a signal with regular SIM cards, though the status bar read "5G. "

Interestingly, Samsung followed Google's Duo video chat app and baked it into the native dialer of the S20 Ultra 5G. The button is just there and, when touched, initiates a Duo video chat with contacts who also use Duo. I had hassle getting this set up.You must open the Duo app separately from the app drawer to get it to sync with the dialer the first time. After that, make sure you employ a number that's associated with your Google account. Once I cleared a few hurdles together with these, it worked.Samsung took aim at gaming phones. Along with the use allotment of RAM and 120Hz refresh rate, a new feature allows S20 Ultra owners to droop up to 5 apps in the RAM. The idea is to spare people the weight of looking forward to huge games including Fortnight to reload when you return to the action. It does, in reality, work as designed. Moreover, the screen helps touch response at a rate of 240Hz during gameplay. This means the demonstrate can seize your taps and swipes more precisely. On the safety front, you've got a Face ID clone, an in-exhibit fingerprint reader, and the standard assortment of PIN, sample, and password alternatives. I found the facial cognizance tool to work rather well, but it wasn't best.Same is correct for the fingerprint reader. While it is easy to train, the reader is placed just a little further up the show and I had a hard time locating it persistently. Shame Samsung didn't adopt the latest fingerprint reader from Qualcomm, which is much larger. The phone ships with Android 10 and Samsung's One UI 2. 1.It's the coolest edition of Samsung's application, but even so I think some people will find it's an excessive amount of, or they might not like the look. For starters, that you would be able to't add Google's home feed to the home screen panels. Instead you'll must put up with Samsung's version thereof. Also, Bixby is the default private assistant, not Google Assistant. You'll need to change that during the settings. At least Samsung offers gobs of room for personalisation.76", ƒ/1. 8, 1. 8µm

Does the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G cost too much?

Hell yeah it does. The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G costs a whopping $1,399 for the 12GB/128GB model and $1,599 for the 16GB/512GB model. Those prices are absurd — particularly if you're paying in full up front.Carriers in the U. S.allow you to break up the pricetag in monthly bills spread over two years. That means $58. 29 per month over 24 months for the entry-level model (ha!"entry-level") and $66. 62 per 30 days for 24 months for the ultra Ultra model. Looked at another way, that's $2 per day to own this phone.I know people love to evaluate things to the cost of a cup of coffee, and $2 does not sound like a lot, but people usually don't buy a cup of coffee every day for 2 years straight. It's hard to say with a straight face that the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G is value for money. It's hard for us to say with a straight face that the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G is value for money. It's ludicrously expensive and never meant for folk on a strict budget. The one saving grace here is that Samsung itself, in addition to companies, are offering coupon codes and deals on the phone. If you can score a few tons of dollars off the S20 Ultra 5G with a trade-in or other deal, then it makes a load more sense. The Ultra compares to prices of the Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max, as only Apple is charging prices as high as Samsung. Google's Pixel phones and LG's G/V series phones are more in your price range, topping out at $999. Even more comparatively cheap?Phones together with the $599 OnePlus 7T.pricey as they come.People with the money and the desire to own the most advanced phone for sale. If you're completely turned on by the concept of the 108MP camera with 8K video capture, fluid 120Hz demonstrate, and 5G, then here's the phone for you. Moreover, the Ultra is the phone to get if you actually need to splurge and adopt 16GB of RAM with 512GB of garage. Bonus if you reside in a 5G market. It's the pinnacle dog, the king of the hill, the phone to beat.

Who shouldn't buy the S20 Ultra 5G?

Most people. The S20 Plus offers nearly every characteristic for $200 less. You lose out on some zoom, but that's not a big deal. The smaller screen and smaller battery mean the S20 Plus itself is smaller, lighter, and easier to use. You do not want 16GB of RAM, and might complement the garage with a microSD card. In other words, save your money. You get 98% of the aspects in an all-around easier-to-manage and more-cost effective kit. There's nothing inherently wrong with the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G. (Okay, maybe the name can be a touch bit shorter. ) But it offers an amazing array of aspects in a slick kit. I simply think the kit is ultra big and, well, ultra pricey. If you want the ultra-mate phone, you'll pay the ultra-mate price.
